Dana Gunter

gunter

Mr. Gunter was hired on August 17, 2005, as Wa-Nee started the first year of their ESL Program (English as a Second Language).

This is Mr. Gunter's fifth year teaching ESL at NorthWood. He graduated from Caston Community School and then Indiana University, where he received a B.S. in Secondary Education and minored in ESL and reading. He's also a veteran of the US Navy, and was a crew member aboard USS Independence. Mr. Gunter also teaches at NWMS as he split his days in two.

Mr. Gunter student-taught at John Adams - South Bend schools. His previous careers have been: groundskeeper, custodian, school bus driver for Plymouth schools, and an industrial maintenance mechanic.

Gunter states, "I have had the privilage of working with several exceptional students. Some have been on the academic teams and BPA teams that have gone on to state competitions and some have reached out to challenge themselves in sports for the first time in their lives. Others have excelled in the classroom by being on the honor roll every semester, and for an English Language Learner that is truly an accomplishment, since the subjects are taught in the language that they are learning. This past year I had one student who was accepted into the National Honor Society. I was very proud of her, for she was the very first ESL student that I have taught who has accomplished this. The students that I have now are setting the standards for those who will follow."

"Working with English language learners can be a real challenge, but seeing them make progress and become successful is the greatest satisfaction anyone could have."
